Plastic Snaps: What are they and how to use them

Hello, Snazzie People,

I thought I would do a quick tutorial on using Plastic Snaps since many of the patterns and projects I create use them.

First, let’s start with some information about Plastic Snaps.

Plastic snaps, or resin snaps, are small, durable fasteners commonly used in sewing and crafting projects. Made from polyacetal resin, these snaps are lightweight yet strong, offering a reliable closure solution for various items.

About Plastic Snaps

Components of Plastic Snaps

Plastic snaps consist of four pieces:

1 & 2. Cap and Post: Another cap that attaches to the opposite side of the fabric, securing the stud or socket in place.

3. Stud: The male part that fits into the socket, creating a secure closure.

4. Socket: The female part that receives the stud.

Uses of Plastic Snaps

Clothing

They are commonly used on baby and children’s clothing, such as onesies, bibs, and diaper covers, due to their ease of use and safety. They are also used on lightweight jackets, shirts, and accessories like scarves and hats.

Bags and Pouches

Plastic snaps are ideal for securing flaps on bags, purses, and wallets, offering a quick and convenient closure method.

Reusable Products:

Plastic snaps are frequently found on reusable items like cloth diapers, menstrual pads, and wet bags, where the snap’s durability and water resistance are beneficial.

Craft Projects

They are popular in various craft projects, such as handmade toys, DIY fabric organizers, and home décor items, where a secure yet flexible fastening is required.

Stationery and Organizers

Plastic snaps can be used in fabric-covered notebooks, planners, and fabric organizers to keep them securely closed while being easy to open and close.

Advantages of Plastic Snaps

Plastic snaps are easy to install using a snap press or hand pliers, making them accessible for beginners and experienced crafters alike.

They come in a wide range of colors, allowing them to be matched to any project for a seamless or decorative look.

Unlike metal snaps, plastic snaps don’t rust and are generally considered safe for children’s clothing and toys.

Their lightweight nature makes them suitable for delicate fabrics and items that require flexibility.

Considerations

While durable, plastic snaps may not be as strong as metal snaps for heavy-duty applications. They are best suited for medium to lightweight fabrics.

To ensure a secure fit, it’s essential to use the correct tools and apply the right amount of pressure during installation. Misaligned or improperly installed snaps can come loose or fail to close properly.

Plastic snaps are a versatile and practical choice for a wide range of sewing and craft projects, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits. Whether you’re making clothing, accessories, or home décor items, these snaps provide a reliable, easy-to-use fastening solution.

I like to use KAM Snaps. They come in a variety of colors and even some different shapes. You can get snaps, tools, and kits directly from KAM Snaps – kamsnaps.com. You can also buy some KAM snap kits on Amazon.

Tools

  • Ruler for marking snap placement
  • Marking tools such as pen or chalk
  • Hand Awl for poking holes through the fabric. This is included with a KAM Snaps Pliers kit but a sewing awl or stiletto would work as well.
  • KAM Snap Pliers for pressing the snap parts together

Step 1. Mark where you want the center of your snap to go.

Step 2. Using the Awl poke a hole in the fabric

Step 3. Press the post of the Cap through the fabric.

Step 4. Place either the Stud or Socket onto the Cap Post ensuring the flat part is against the fabric.

Step 5. Position the Pliers over the Snap assembly so that the Cap is placed inside the domed side.

Step 6. Press with moderate pressure.

Repeat steps 1 – 6 for the other half of the Snap.

That’s it! As you can see, plastic snaps are an easy closure option. Since they come in many colors, you can find a snap to match any project.
