McCall’s M8240 – Johnny Collar Shirt

McCall’s M8240 is a polo or johnny collar style top with a half-placket neck opening. You have the option of adding buttons or not. I like to leave the buttons out and just wear a tank top under it. It also has the option of sleeves with or without cuffs and an optional waistband.

I love McCall’s M8240! I think I have successfully made four of them. This was one of the first patterns I tried four years ago when I decided I was going to try making more of my own clothes. Unfortunately, I ended up with two failures. The neck is a little hard to figure out at first.

I said I made four successfully, but two had to be retired because they were made of low quality fabric.

The two I have left are both made from the same lightweight French terry from Cali fabrics, just different colors. The green top was made for my fall 2024 wardrobe, and the new white top is part of my winter 2025 wardrobe.

As I said before, I prefer to make the plackets without buttons and just wear them over a tank top for modesty. I also prefer the sleeve cuffs and the waistband.

I made these tops using both my straight stitch machine and my serger. It’s such an easy sew and I was able to make the white one over the course of two evenings after work.

I usually just wear these casually around the house, but they could be dressed up. Just look at the pattern envelope. I like how they styled it with a scarf.  The picture on the pattern envelope also looks like they made it out of a type of fleece. This is something I might try in the future.

I have considered hacking this pattern to make a short-sleeved version with a light sweater knit for spring.

Have you ever made McCall’s M8240?

Do you have a favorite polo style top you like to make?

Happy Sewing!
